It’s Friday and we are all looking forward to a fabulous weekend with temperatures around and above 23°C (73°F) reminding us that summer is not far away. The last bits of snow on the majestic mountains surrounding famous Neuschwanstein castle are holding on to the summits, the skiing season is trying to hold on until the Easter holidays, but in the valleys, T-shirts, summer dress and beergarten-time is in full swing.
The castle itself is always worth a visit and impressive in its design. Built between 1869 and 1886 it was equipped with very modern technologies like: Running water on all floors, hot-air central heating an electric call system, elevators and even telephone connections.
Surrounding the castle, there are 50 km winter hiking trails, the walk up to the famous Marienbrücke gives you a fabulous view of the back side of the castle.
Useful information:
Neuschwanstein Castle is situated near Schwangau and Füssen in the Allgäu. The path to the castle starts in the village of Hohenschwangau, and this is also your last opportunity to park. Entrance tickets are available only at the Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau in the village of Hohenschwangau below the castle. It takes about 30-40 minutes to walk from the ticket center to the castle (around 1.5 km on a steep uphill road). A more relaxing (and romantic) way is the horse carriage. The carriages operate all year round and shuttle between Hotel Müller and Neuschwanstein Castle according to demand, with no fixed timetable.
Please note: Entrance tickets can only be bought at the Ticketcenter Hohenschwangau in the village of Hohenschwangau below the castle.
