We wish everyone a fabulous ‘Bundesfeier’, especially our Swiss Partners, The Dolder Grand in Zürich and Parkhotel Vitznau on the shores of Lake Lucerne.

happy-swiss-national-day-by-neuschwansteiner-cakesThe Swiss National Day (German: Schweizer Bundesfeier; French: Fête nationale Suisse; Italian: Festa nazionale svizzera; Romansh: Fiasta naziunala Svizra) is celebrated in communities all around Switzerland every year on August 1st. Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day but it has only been the official national holiday/ public holiday in all of Switzerland since 1994.

The date refers to the foundation of the Swiss Confederacy by means of the Federal Charter (Bundesbrief), ‘Pacte du Grutli’, of 1291, one of the country’s most important founding documents by the three cantons of Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden.

Ready for a Neuschwansteiner?

The day is started generally with a prayer and the singing of the Swiss national anthem (the Schweizerpsalm). In the evening church bells ring throughout the country at 8:00 p.m. (20:00).

Fireworks and especially the illuminated Rheinfall at Schaffhausen are typical for the national celebrations.
